Newham, the borough that contains Stratford, records 100.22 crimes per 1,000 people, about 1.2 times the London rate of 82.39, and Stratford’s two police neighbourhoods logged 9,404 crimes and anti-social behaviour reports between September 2025 and August 2026. Most of that is theft and shoplifting around one of London’s biggest shopping and transport hubs, not violence against residents.
Data: Newham borough figures are police-recorded crime for the 12 months to April 2026, counts and rates from CrimeRate’s analysis of data.police.uk (Metropolitan Police). Stratford neighbourhood figures are the monthly totals published on police.uk for September 2025 to August 2026. Shares, sums and ratios are our own arithmetic. Updated 2 October 2026.
Is Stratford safe compared with London and England?
Newham’s recorded crime rate is 100.22 per 1,000 people in the 12 months to April 2026, according to CrimeRate. That is about 1.2 times the London rate of 82.39 and about 1.5 times the England rate of 67.79. In our London borough ranking Newham is fourth highest of 33 areas, behind central boroughs such as Westminster (125.02) and Kensington and Chelsea (119.60). The headline total of 40,892 excludes anti-social behaviour: the 13 crime categories add up to exactly 40,892, and 10,048 anti-social behaviour reports come on top, giving 50,940 incidents in all. Stratford itself has no separate rate, because police.uk publishes neighbourhood counts without a population. For the whole city see is London safe?
How much crime is recorded in Stratford itself?
Police.uk splits Stratford into two Metropolitan Police neighbourhoods. Stratford Olympic Park, which covers the Olympic Park side and the area around the big shopping centre, recorded 5,052 crimes and anti-social behaviour reports in the 12 months to August 2026. The Stratford neighbourhood next to it recorded 4,352. Together that is 9,404, or a little under 800 a month.
| Month | Stratford Olympic Park | Stratford |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 2025 | 364 | 402 |
| Oct 2025 | 477 | 349 |
| Nov 2025 | 463 | 379 |
| Dec 2025 | 499 | 295 |
| Jan 2026 | 442 | 324 |
| Feb 2026 | 386 | 387 |
| Mar 2026 | 386 | 379 |
| Apr 2026 | 387 | 378 |
| May 2026 | 434 | 403 |
| Jun 2026 | 373 | 372 |
| Jul 2026 | 412 | 342 |
| Aug 2026 | 429 | 342 |
| 12 months | 5,052 | 4,352 |
The two neighbourhoods move in opposite directions in winter. Stratford Olympic Park peaked in December 2025 at 499, its busiest month, while the Stratford neighbourhood had its quietest month at the same time, 295. That pattern fits a retail area: the run-up to Christmas brings more shoppers, and with them more shoplifting and theft, to the shopping centre, while residential streets nearby are quieter. In August 2026 shoplifting was the single largest line in Stratford Olympic Park with 148 of 429 records, about 35 per cent, followed by violence and sexual offences (73), other theft (50) and anti-social behaviour (43). In the Stratford neighbourhood the top lines that month were anti-social behaviour (95), violence and sexual offences (75), other theft (37) and theft from the person (25).
Which parts of Newham record the most and the least crime?
CrimeRate publishes separate rates for four smaller areas in Newham. They show how much rates vary inside one borough, from 130.30 per 1,000 in Creekmouth to 63.90 in Temple Mills, a gap of about two to one.
| Area (Newham) | Recorded crimes | Per 1,000, 12 months to April 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Creekmouth | 679 | 130.30 |
| Silvertown | 670 | 105.28 |
| North Woolwich | 999 | 64.64 |
| Temple Mills | 993 | 63.90 |
All four are small, so a few dozen offences move their rates a long way. Creekmouth’s high rate comes from 679 offences in a largely industrial and riverside area with few residents, which is exactly where a per-person rate overstates the risk for anyone who lives there. Temple Mills, on the northern edge of the Olympic Park, records a rate well under the borough and London figures.
What kind of crime is recorded in Newham?
Violence and sexual offences is the largest single category, but theft of one kind or another is the bigger story. The table shows each category’s count and its share of the 40,892 offences (anti-social behaviour excluded).
| Category | Newham, 12 months to April 2026 | Share of total |
|---|---|---|
| Violence and sexual offences | 12,089 | 29.6% |
| Shoplifting | 4,390 | 10.7% |
| Vehicle crime | 4,348 | 10.6% |
| Other theft | 4,296 | 10.5% |
| Theft from the person | 3,990 | 9.8% |
| Drugs | 2,529 | 6.2% |
| Public order | 2,419 | 5.9% |
| Criminal damage and arson | 2,085 | 5.1% |
| Robbery | 1,703 | 4.2% |
| Burglary | 1,641 | 4.0% |
| Other crime | 577 | 1.4% |
| Bicycle theft | 532 | 1.3% |
| Possession of weapons | 293 | 0.7% |
Three points stand out. First, shoplifting, vehicle crime, other theft and theft from the person together come to 17,024 offences, about 42 per cent of the total, which is the signature of a borough with a major shopping centre, an international rail station and heavy footfall. Second, theft from the person, which is mostly phones and bags taken without force, is unusually high: 3,990 offences, about 3.2 times the 1,248 recorded in Lewisham, a borough with a similar overall rate. Third, violence and sexual offences is 29.6 per cent of the total, a smaller share than in Lewisham (36.9 per cent). It is a broad police category that includes harassment and offences with no injury. Anti-social behaviour adds 10,048 reports, about 20 per cent of all 50,940 incidents.
Is Newham getting better or worse?
Slightly worse. CrimeRate records 39,492 offences in the previous year and 40,892 in the 12 months to April 2026, a rise of 1,400 or about 3.5 per cent. The rate moved from 97.51 to 100.22 per 1,000. That is a real increase but a modest one, and in a borough that has added large numbers of homes, shops and visitors around Stratford in recent years, part of it reflects more activity, not only more risk.
Why do different sites give Newham different rates?
CrimeRate divides offences by a daytime, or workday, population from the 2011 Census. Using Newham’s resident population from the 2021 Census, 351,100, the same 40,892 offences work out at about 116 per 1,000 residents, or about 145 if anti-social behaviour is included. Neither number is wrong; they answer different questions. Compare areas using one source only, and read where our crime data comes from for the limits of police data.
Is Stratford safe at night and for visitors?
Police street-level data has no time of day, so it cannot show whether Stratford is riskier after dark. The mix tells you what to watch for: phone and bag theft, shoplifting-related disorder and anti-social behaviour around the station, the shopping centre and event days at the stadium and arenas. For visitors the practical risk is losing a phone or wallet, not being attacked. Keep your phone out of sight on platforms and at crossings, use busy, lit routes after events and check the streets you will use in the postcode checker.
Is Stratford a safe place to live?
The number that matters for a home is the one for your own streets. Much of Stratford’s recorded crime is concentrated in and around the shopping centre and transport interchange, where many crimes are recorded but few people live. Residential streets a short walk away can look very different. Compare two postcodes before you decide and read how to check crime in your area. This page describes what was recorded, not the people who live in Stratford or Newham.
How do I check a specific street or postcode in Stratford?
- Enter the postcode in the postcode checker to see 12 months of police-recorded crime and the trend by month.
- Add a second postcode, for example one in Forest Gate or Leyton, to compare two areas side by side.
- Zoom into the UK crime map to see what was recorded near a particular street.
These figures describe areas, not addresses. Police data covers reported crime only, and each crime is shown at a nearby anonymised point, so a busy station or shopping centre can collect incidents from the surrounding streets.
