Bristol crime map: checking crime by area and street

Safety App UK8 min read

The Bristol crime map shows street-level crime recorded by Avon and Somerset Constabulary, published monthly on data.police.uk; on 13 October 2026 the latest month is August 2026. In the 12 months to April 2026 Bristol recorded 61,026 crimes, a crime rate of 104.63 per 1,000 people, against about 68 for England.

Data: data.police.uk changelog and police.uk neighbourhood pages (Avon and Somerset Constabulary, September 2025 to August 2026), CrimeRate.co.uk (12 months to April 2026, excluding anti-social behaviour) and Bristol City Council ward population estimates (ONS mid-2024), all checked 13 October 2026. Updated 13 October 2026.

Key figures: the Bristol crime map (checked 13 October 2026)

  • Bristol crime rate: 104.63 per 1,000 (61,026 crimes, 12 months to April 2026), 71% above the South West (61.16), CrimeRate shows.
  • With 11,125 anti-social behaviour reports added, Bristol logged 72,151 incidents, about 146 per 1,000 residents on the ONS mid-2024 estimate of 494,399 (our calculation).
  • Our count of police.uk data, September 2025 to August 2026: Eastville recorded about 180 incidents per 1,000 residents, St George Troopers Hill about 58, a gap of roughly three times.
  • The Old City Docks neighbourhood recorded 4,667 incidents in the same 12 months, the most of any Bristol neighbourhood we checked; Broadmead recorded 3,682.
  • Latest month on the map: August 2026. Avon and Somerset supplied crime data for it; British Transport Police (Temple Meads and other stations) did not.

How do I check crime on a Bristol street?

To check crime on a Bristol street, type its postcode into our postcode checker for a 12-month count within one mile, then zoom to the street on the crime map to see where the August 2026 incidents sit. In central Bristol, read the categories: many dots in Broadmead are shoplifting.

  1. Enter the postcode. The checker counts police-recorded crime and anti-social behaviour within a one-mile radius, month by month. From a postcode in Redcliffe or St Pauls, one mile reaches Broadmead, Cabot Circus and the Harbourside, so expect a high total.
  2. Zoom in on the map. On the UK crime map, drag to the street and zoom past street level until the clusters split. A pile of dots on one point is usually a shopping centre, a car park or a busy junction.
  3. Read the categories. Shoplifting and other theft describe shops and crowds; burglary, vehicle crime and violence say more about what residents experience.
  4. Open the police.uk neighbourhood page. Avon and Somerset has about 41 neighbourhood areas inside the city (Bristol North, East and South), each with 12 monthly totals and the local team’s priorities.
  5. Compare with a similar street. Compare a shopping street with another shopping street, and a residential road with another residential road. Our Bristol crime by ward ranking puts all 34 wards side by side.

Safety App UK shows this police data on a live map, plans safer walking routes and sends SOS to your trusted circle. It is an independent app, not a police service: in an emergency call 999, and use 101 for anything else.

Which Bristol neighbourhoods record the most and least crime per 1,000 people?

From September 2025 to August 2026, Eastville recorded about 180 incidents per 1,000 residents and Hartcliffe and Withywood about 178, by our count of police.uk data. St George Troopers Hill (about 58), Clifton (67) and Stoke Bishop (68) recorded the fewest. Bristol as a whole logged about 146 per 1,000.

Highest (Sep 2025 to Aug 2026) Incidents Residents (mid-2024) Per 1,000
1. Eastville 2,792 15,504 180.1
2. Hartcliffe and Withywood 3,481 19,601 177.6*
3. St George West 1,115 7,170 155.5

Source: police.uk neighbourhood pages, Avon and Somerset Constabulary, September 2025 to August 2026, checked 13 October 2026 (incidents include anti-social behaviour); residents: ONS mid-2024 ward estimates published by Bristol City Council. Sums and rates are our own calculation. We compared 14 neighbourhoods whose names match a ward. *Hartcliffe and Withywood’s police area appears to differ from the ward: police.uk shows 269 incidents for July 2026, our ward-boundary count showed 309, so treat its rate as approximate.

Why trust a police neighbourhood divided by a ward population? Because for most of these areas the two match closely. For July 2026, police.uk shows 64 incidents in Stoke Bishop, 197 in Filwood, 90 in Clifton Down and 30 in St George Troopers Hill; our own count inside the ward boundaries for the same month, published in our ward ranking, gave exactly the same numbers. Southmead, Knowle, Bedminster and St George West differ by one. Redland also has a low count (786 in its 12 months, about 58 per 1,000), but its police.uk page ends in May 2026, so it is left out of the table. Neighbourhoods in the city centre are not in the table because their boundaries do not follow the wards, and almost nobody lives in some of them.

The high end is not the city centre: Eastville is in the east of the city, Hartcliffe and Withywood and Filwood in the south. In August 2026 violence and sexual offences were the top category in all three (77, 96 and 78 incidents). These figures count incidents in a place, not the people who live there.

What does the Bristol crime map show in the city centre?

Six central neighbourhoods (Old City Docks, Broadmead, St Pauls, Harbourside and Hotwells, Stokes Croft and St Michael’s, and Redcliffe and Temple) recorded 17,101 incidents from September 2025 to August 2026, by our count of police.uk data. The 14 residential neighbourhoods in the table above, home to about 180,600 people, recorded 20,564.

Old City Docks 4,667 October 2025: 485; May 2026: 315 Violence and sexual offences 119, anti-social behaviour 89, other theft 32, public order 28

Two patterns stand out. In Broadmead, shoplifting was 122 of 338 incidents in August 2026, about 36%, and the local team lists shop theft and anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime in city-centre car parks among its priorities (updated 17 September 2026). A cluster of dots over Cabot Circus is mostly theft from shops. In the Old City Docks neighbourhood the month-to-month swing is large: October 2025 was 54% higher than May 2026. Pick a 12-month view before judging any central street.

What is the Bristol crime rate and which crimes are most common?

Bristol’s crime rate was 104.63 per 1,000 people in the 12 months to April 2026, from 61,026 crimes, up 3.0% on 59,276 a year earlier, CrimeRate.co.uk shows. Violence and sexual offences made up 41.3% of the total; theft from the person was only 366 offences.

Category (12 months to April 2026) Crimes Per 1,000 South West per 1,000

Source: CrimeRate.co.uk, Bristol, 12 months to April 2026 (last updated 7 June 2026), checked 13 October 2026. The 13 categories add up exactly to the 61,026 headline. CrimeRate uses its own population base, which includes daytime population.

For the map, the useful comparison is with the region. Robbery (2.50 against 0.70 per 1,000) and bicycle theft (1.62 against 0.54) are both about three times the South West rate, and vehicle crime about two and a half times. On the map, these offences cluster in and around the city centre. Why does the same Bristol street look busier in some months?

Because many Bristol neighbourhoods swing by 50% or more between their quietest and busiest months. In the year to August 2026, Stoke Bishop went from 122 incidents in October 2025 to 57 in May 2026, and Knowle from 86 in January 2026 to 153 in July 2026, by our count of police.uk data.

One month on the crime map is a snapshot. If you are choosing where to live or comparing two streets, use the 12-month total in the postcode checker, and compare the same months for both places.

What does the Bristol crime map not show?

The Bristol crime map does not show exact addresses, the time of day, unreported crime or the most recent weeks. On 13 October 2026 the latest month is August 2026, British Transport Police data is missing for June to August 2026, and some neighbourhood pages end months earlier than others.

Not on the map Why it matters in Bristol
Exact locations Every crime is moved to an anonymous point over a street or public place covering at least eight addresses. A dot on a Broadmead street can stand for a shop anywhere along it.
Station crime, June to August 2026 Temple Meads and other stations are policed by British Transport Police, which did not supply those months, the data.police.uk changelog shows.
Uneven lag On 13 October 2026 most Bristol neighbourhood pages end in August 2026, but Redland ends in May 2026. Compare the same 12 months.
Time of day Street-level data has the month only, so it cannot separate a daytime shopping street from a late-night one.
Rate per resident The map shows counts. Broadmead and the Old City have few residents and huge footfall.
Unreported crime Only police-recorded crime appears.

Our guide to the police crime map explains the anonymous points and the missing forces, and where our crime data comes from covers how we process the data.
