The City of London crime map shows street-level crime recorded by the City of London Police, published monthly on data.police.uk; on 7 October 2026 the latest month is August 2026. In the 12 months to April 2026 the Square Mile recorded 9,528 crimes, but it has only about 8,600 residents and some 614,500 workers, so the per-person rate depends entirely on who you count.
Data: data.police.uk changelog and police.uk neighbourhood pages (latest month August 2026), CrimeRate.co.uk (12 months to April 2026, excluding anti-social behaviour), ONS Census 2021 and City of London Corporation key facts, all checked 7 October 2026. Updated 7 October 2026.
Key figures: crime in the City of London (checked 7 October 2026)
- 9,528 crimes in the 12 months to April 2026, up from 9,292 the year before (about +2.5%), CrimeRate.co.uk shows.
- Residents: 8,600 (ONS Census 2021). Workers: 614,500 (City of London Corporation). That is about 71 workers for every resident.
- Thefts of all kinds make up 59% of the City’s crime; violence and sexual offences 16%, against about 31% across London.
- Anti-social behaviour is almost absent: 172 incidents, under 2% of all recorded incidents, against about 21% across London.
- Busiest police.uk neighbourhood in our count: Fleet, with 1,958 incidents from September 2025 to August 2026.
Why does the City of London’s crime rate look so high, or so low?
The City of London’s crime rate looks extreme because its population is tiny at night and huge by day. Dividing 9,528 crimes (12 months to April 2026) by 8,600 residents gives about 1,108 per 1,000, while dividing by 614,500 workers gives about 15.5. Neither figure tells you how risky a street is.
That is why the same place can be called both the worst and the safest part of London. A rate per resident makes the Square Mile look many times worse than Westminster (125.02 per 1,000 on CrimeRate). CrimeRate itself uses a daytime population base and shows the City at 21.00 per 1,000, which it describes as the lowest in London. Both are artefacts of the denominator. Our London crime map guide leaves the City out of the borough ranking for exactly this reason.
| Way of measuring (12 months to April 2026) | Base | Crimes per 1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Per resident (our calculation) | 8,600 residents, ONS Census 2021 | about 1,108 |
| CrimeRate.co.uk published rate | CrimeRate’s daytime population base | 21.00 |
| Per worker (our calculation) | 614,500 workers, City of London Corporation | about 15.5 |
| London, for comparison | CrimeRate base | 82.39 |
| England, for comparison | CrimeRate base | 67.79 |
Sources: CrimeRate.co.uk, City of London (9,528 crimes excluding anti-social behaviour, 12 months to April 2026); ONS Census 2021 (8,600, rounded to the nearest 100); City of London Corporation key facts (614,500 workers). All checked 7 October 2026. Rates per resident and per worker are our own calculation; the worker figure does not count tourists, shoppers or people on a night out, so the real daytime population is larger still.
How do I check crime on a City of London street?
To check crime on a City of London street, enter its postcode in our postcode checker for a 12-month count within one mile, then zoom to the street on the crime map for August 2026. In the Square Mile a one-mile radius reaches well beyond the City into Westminster, Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Southwark, so the map view matters more than the total.
- Enter the postcode. The checker counts police-recorded crime and anti-social behaviour within a one-mile radius, month by month. Because the City is small, most of that circle is outside it, so treat the number as a picture of central London, not of one street.
- Zoom in on the map. On the UK crime map, zoom past street level until clusters split. Piles of dots usually sit on a station entrance, a shopping arcade or a junction near bars, not on homes.
- Read the categories. In the City, other theft, shoplifting and theft from the person dominate. If you live on the Barbican or Golden Lane estates, look at burglary, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour instead.
- Open the police.uk neighbourhood page. The City of London Police splits the Square Mile into six neighbourhoods on police.uk (Bank, Barbican, Fenchurch Street, Fleet, Liverpool Street and Monument), each with 12 monthly totals and the top categories.
- Check which month it ends in. On 7 October 2026 the six neighbourhood pages end in three different months (see below), so compare like with like.
Safety App UK shows this police data on a live map, plans safer walking routes and sends SOS to your trusted circle. It is an independent app, not a police service: in an emergency call 999, and use 101 for anything else.

Liverpool Street’s total covers a period that ends two months earlier than Fleet’s, so the two cannot be ranked against each other with confidence. What the table does show is the mix: in every neighbourhood, theft categories fill most of the top four. Fleet was the only one where theft from the person (pickpocketing and bag snatching) led in the latest month. Its busiest month was August 2026 with 192 incidents, against 144 in May 2026.
CrimeRate.co.uk uses its own, smaller areas. By rate in the 12 months to April 2026, Blackfriars (33.97 per 1,000), Temple (33.18) and Aldgate (31.45) were highest, and London Wall (6.18), Fenchurch (14.38) and Moorgate (15.09) lowest. Golden Lane Estate shows 71.95, but from only 67 crimes, so its rate rests on a very small base. By count, Monument (1,428), Blackfriars (1,273) and Bishopsgate (1,038) recorded the most.
What kinds of crime happen in the City of London?

In the 12 months to April 2026 other theft (2,312), shoplifting (1,666), theft from the person (1,322) and bicycle theft (310) added up to 5,610 of the 9,528 crimes, about 59%, CrimeRate.co.uk figures show. Violence and sexual offences were 1,518, about 16%.
| Category (12 months to April 2026) | Crimes | Share of City total | Share of London total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other theft | 2,312 | 24.3% | 10.9% |

Source: CrimeRate.co.uk, City of London and Greater London, 12 months to April 2026, checked 7 October 2026 (London figures checked 6 October 2026). The 13 City categories add up exactly to the 9,528 headline; shares are our own calculation.
Three differences from the rest of London stand out. Theft categories are about twice as large a share as in London overall. Vehicle crime is tiny (1.8% against 9.1%), because few people park on City streets. And anti-social behaviour, which adds about a quarter to London’s crime figures, adds less than 2% in the City: with few residents, there are few people at home to report noise or nuisance. A dot on the City map is most likely a phone, wallet, bag or bike taken from a commuter, shopper or drinker.
Is the City of London safe to work in or visit?
For the 614,500 people who work there, the City of London recorded about 15.5 crimes per 1,000 workers in the 12 months to April 2026, by our calculation, and most were thefts rather than violence. The main risk for a visitor or commuter is losing a phone, bag or bicycle in a crowded place, especially near stations and bars after work.
That figure is a rough guide, not a precise risk: tourists, shoppers and people on a night out are not in the worker count, and a single office worker is not exposed to every incident. Crime rose about 2.5% year on year (9,292 to 9,528). For the wider picture, see Is London safe? and our London crime rate by borough table.
What does the City of London crime map not show?
The City of London crime map does not show exact addresses, the time of day, unreported crime or the last few weeks. In October 2026 it also lacks British Transport Police data for June, July and August 2026, so crime at Liverpool Street, Bank, Moorgate and other stations is missing for those months, according to the data.police.uk changelog.
| Not on the map | Why it matters in the City |
|---|---|
| Station and Underground crime, June to August 2026 | British Transport Police polices the rail and Underground network and did not supply those months. Busy station areas look quieter than they were. |
| Uneven lag | On 7 October 2026 Bank and Fleet end in August 2026, Barbican and Fenchurch Street in July 2026, and Liverpool Street and Monument in June 2026. A neighbourhood can look lower simply because it has fewer months published. |
| Exact locations | Each crime is moved to an anonymous point over a street or public place that covers at least eight addresses. In dense office blocks one point can stand for a whole stretch of street. |
| Time of day | Street-level data has the month only. It cannot separate a lunchtime pickpocketing from a late-night fight. |
| Rate per person | The map shows counts. With 8,600 residents and over 600,000 workers, no single rate fits the City. |
| Unreported crime and fraud | Only police-recorded crime with a street location appears. Fraud and computer misuse are not part of the street-level map. |
Our guide to the police crime map explains the anonymous points and missing forces in detail, and where our crime data comes from covers how we process the data.
City of London crime map: FAQ
Is there a crime map for the City of London?
Yes. Our crime map and police.uk both show street-level crime for the Square Mile from City of London Police data, free and without an account. The latest month on 7 October 2026 is August 2026.
Who polices the City of London?
The City of London Police, a separate force from the Metropolitan Police, which covers the 32 London boroughs. On police.uk the City is split into six neighbourhoods: Bank, Barbican, Fenchurch Street, Fleet, Liverpool Street and Monument.
What is the crime rate in the City of London?
It depends on the base. CrimeRate.co.uk shows 21.00 per 1,000 on a daytime population base for the 12 months to April 2026 (9,528 crimes). Per resident it would be about 1,108 per 1,000, and per worker about 15.5, by our calculation. Use the categories, not one rate.
What is the most common crime in the City of London?
Other theft, with 2,312 crimes in the 12 months to April 2026, followed by shoplifting (1,666) and violence and sexual offences (1,518). All theft categories together made up about 59% of recorded crime.
Why is the City of London missing from London borough rankings?
Because it has only about 8,600 residents (Census 2021) but hundreds of thousands of daily workers, so any rate per person is misleading. Our London crime map guide ranks the 32 boroughs and treats the City separately.
