Leeds is the largest city in Yorkshire and the seat of West Yorkshire Police — the force that currently sits at the very top of our force-by-force ranking, at 107.9 crimes per 1,000 people (2025/26). A force-wide number that high raises an obvious question: is it high everywhere across the force area, or is it pulled up by a handful of specific places?
What the wider picture looks like
West Yorkshire Police covers Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Kirklees and Calderdale under one rate. Leeds is the largest single contributor to that figure by population, and within Leeds itself the same pattern that shows up in every other city in this series repeats at a smaller scale: the retail and transport core around Briggate and the train station, the student and nightlife district of Headingley a couple of miles out, and the quieter suburb of Roundhay further out again all sit under one force-wide number — and, as the numbers below show, look nothing alike.
Compare Leeds areas yourself
A single force-wide figure cannot tell you about the specific street you actually care about. A couple of comparisons worth trying, each opens live with both postcodes already loaded:
- Leeds city centre vs Roundhay — the main shopping and transport hub against a quieter suburb.
- Headingley vs Roundhay — the city’s main student and nightlife district against the same suburb.
A live snapshot from the police API (July 2026)
Here is what the categories actually looked like in a small area around each postcode last month, pulled live from data.police.uk — the same feed the address checker uses — and checked by hand against the raw record count. Each box is roughly 250–300 metres across, small enough to stay well clear of the police API’s 500-record-per-request cap, which silently truncates anything busier than that.
Leeds city centre
Headingley
Roundhay
Read these as a mix, not a scoreboard: the sample sizes are deliberately different, so the percentages show category share, not which area had more crime overall. Leeds city centre is dominated by shoplifting — half of everything logged there — which fits its role as the region’s main retail core. Headingley splits evenly between anti-social behaviour and violent crime, consistent with a dense student and nightlife strip. Roundhay’s sample is small — 9 incidents over the whole month — so each one moves the percentages a lot, but violent crime still being the single largest share, even in a quiet suburb, is a reminder that a lower count changes the scale of the picture, not necessarily its shape. This is one month of data, not a trend — for the full twelve-month picture and an actual up-or-down trend for one address, use the checker itself.
The limits of this data
This is recorded crime — what was reported and logged, not everything that happened. A rate, high or low, is not a verdict on a place or the people who live there; it is one data point among several worth weighing. If you want the fuller picture of how UK police data works and what it cannot tell you, we have written that up separately.
We also tested CrimeRate’s claim that Leeds is the safest place in West Yorkshire Police’s area against Halifax, the force’s named highest-crime town — see safest areas in Leeds.

And as always: none of this replaces calling 999 in an emergency. This is context for everyday decisions, not a substitute for the emergency services.
