The Leeds crime map shows street-level crime recorded by West Yorkshire Police, published monthly on data.police.uk; on 16 October 2026 the latest month is August 2026. In the 12 months to April 2026 Leeds recorded 85,060 crimes, a crime rate of 107.18 per 1,000 people, against about 68 for England.
Data: data.police.uk changelog and police.uk neighbourhood pages (West Yorkshire Police, latest 12 months on each page, ending June, July or August 2026), CrimeRate.co.uk (12 months to April 2026, excluding anti-social behaviour, last updated 7 June 2026) and the ONS Census 2021 (Leeds 812,000), all checked 16 October 2026. Updated 16 October 2026.
Key figures: the Leeds crime map (checked 16 October 2026)
- Leeds crime rate: 107.18 per 1,000 (85,060 crimes, 12 months to April 2026), down 3.6% on 88,245 a year earlier, CrimeRate shows.
- Within the Leeds district, Morley records 95.96 crimes per 1,000 and Alwoodley 34.32, a gap of about 2.8 times.
- Twelve outer Leeds towns together record about 72 per 1,000, so the main Leeds area runs about 1.5 times higher (our calculation from CrimeRate figures).
- Across the six Leeds policing areas on police.uk, May 2026 (9,422 incidents) was 23% busier than February 2026 (7,651), our count.
- Latest month on the map: August 2026. West Yorkshire Police supplied crime data for it; British Transport Police (Leeds station and other stations) did not.
How do I check crime on a Leeds street?
To check crime on a Leeds street, type its postcode into our postcode checker for a 12-month count within one mile, then zoom to the street on the crime map to see where the August 2026 incidents sit. Near Briggate or Trinity, many dots are shoplifting rather than street violence.
- Enter the postcode. The checker counts police-recorded crime and anti-social behaviour within a one-mile radius, month by month. From a postcode in Woodhouse, Holbeck or Hunslet, one mile reaches the city centre shops and bars, so expect a high total.
- Zoom in on the map. On the UK crime map, drag to the street and zoom past street level until the clusters split. A stack of dots on one point is usually a shopping centre, a car park, a hospital or a busy junction.
- Read the categories. Shoplifting and other theft describe shops and crowds; burglary, vehicle crime and criminal damage say more about what residents on a street experience.
- Open the police.uk page for your area. West Yorkshire Police splits Leeds into six neighbourhood policing areas (Leeds City, East, South, West, North West and North East), each with 12 monthly totals and the local team’s priorities.
- Compare with a similar street. Compare a shopping street with another shopping street, and a residential road with another residential road. Our Leeds crime by ward page ranks all 33 wards for one month on one method.
Safety App UK shows this police data on a live map, plans safer walking routes and sends SOS to your trusted circle. It is an independent app, not a police service: in an emergency call 999, and use 101 for anything else.
Which parts of Leeds record the most and least crime per 1,000 people?
In the 12 months to April 2026, the main Leeds area recorded 107.18 crimes per 1,000, followed by Morley (95.96) and Yeadon (94.70), CrimeRate shows. Alwoodley (34.32), Garforth (48.16) and Kippax (53.61) recorded the fewest of the 13 places in the Leeds district that CrimeRate lists.
| Highest (12 months to April 2026) | Crimes | Per 1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Leeds (main urban area) | 85,060 | 107.18 |
| 2. Morley | 4,230 | 95.96 |
| 3. Yeadon | 1,471 | 94.70 |
| 4. Pudsey | 3,056 | 80.60 |
| 5. Rothwell | 1,415 | 75.44 |
| Lowest (12 months to April 2026) | Crimes | Per 1,000 |
|---|---|---|

| 2. Garforth | 775 | 48.16 |

Source: CrimeRate.co.uk, West Yorkshire (town and city comparison), 12 months to April 2026, last updated 7 June 2026, checked 16 October 2026. Counts exclude anti-social behaviour. Between the two tables sit Guiseley (72.09), East Ardsley (69.43) and Wetherby (57.32). CrimeRate uses its own area boundaries and population base, so these are places, not council wards.
Our own arithmetic on these figures: the 12 outer towns in the table and the note together recorded 16,845 crimes on a combined base of about 235,000 people, roughly 72 per 1,000. The main Leeds area, at 107.18, runs about 1.5 times that. Inside the district the spread is wide: Morley’s rate is about 2.8 times Alwoodley’s, although both are suburban towns a few miles from the centre.
Treat the small places with care. Alwoodley’s 321 crimes or Kippax’s 543 can move several points in a year with a few dozen extra offences. For a finer, ward-by-ward picture inside the city, see Leeds crime by ward and safest areas in Leeds. These figures count incidents in a place, not the people who live there.
Which Leeds policing areas record the most crime on the map?
Leeds East recorded 24,810 incidents in its latest 12 months (July 2025 to June 2026) and Leeds South 22,464, the most of the six areas on police.uk. Leeds North East recorded the fewest, 10,665 from September 2025 to August 2026. These are counts for areas of very different sizes, not rates.
| Policing area (police.uk) | Incidents, latest 12 months | Period | Top categories, latest month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leeds East | 24,810 | Jul 2025–Jun 2026 | Violence and sexual offences 914, anti-social behaviour 194, criminal damage 161 (June) |
| Leeds South | 22,464 | Aug 2025–Jul 2026 | Violence and sexual offences 723, anti-social behaviour 232, criminal damage 174 (July) |
| Leeds West | 19,775 | Jul 2025–Jun 2026 | Violence and sexual offences 697, anti-social behaviour 191, shoplifting 140 (June) |
| Leeds City | 15,266 | Sep 2025–Aug 2026 | Violence and sexual offences 350, shoplifting 320, anti-social behaviour 129 (August) |
| Leeds North West | 13,736 | Aug 2025–Jul 2026 | Violence and sexual offences 399, anti-social behaviour 150, shoplifting 110 (July) |
| Leeds North East | 10,665 | Sep 2025–Aug 2026 | Violence and sexual offences 368, anti-social behaviour 124, public order 93 (August) |
Source: police.uk neighbourhood pages, West Yorkshire Police, checked 16 October 2026. Totals include anti-social behaviour; sums are our own calculation. The pages end in different months, so the rows should not be added together.
To compare the six fairly we used only the ten months every page shares, September 2025 to June 2026. In those months the six areas recorded 87,427 incidents: Leeds East 23.2%, South 21.1%, West 18.3%, City 14.6%, North West 13.1% and North East 9.8%, by our count. The city centre area therefore records fewer incidents than three of the residential areas, because they are far larger.
The Leeds City area is the only one where shoplifting comes close to violence (320 against 350 in August 2026), which matches its role as the region’s main shopping centre. Its neighbourhood team issued priorities on 6 October 2026 for three ward areas: Hunslet and Riverside, Little London and Woodhouse, and Beeston and Holbeck. A cluster of dots over Briggate, Trinity Leeds or the Victoria Quarter is mostly theft from shops.

Source: CrimeRate.co.uk, Leeds, 12 months to April 2026 (last updated 7 June 2026), checked 16 October 2026. The 13 categories add up exactly to the 85,060 headline; shares are our own calculation.
Per resident, the same 85,060 crimes against the 812,000 people counted in Leeds in the ONS Census 2021 come to about 105 per 1,000; adding the 7,984 anti-social behaviour reports gives 93,044 incidents, about 115 per 1,000 residents (our calculation). CrimeRate’s Leeds area does not follow the council boundary exactly, so treat these as estimates. For the full verdict on the city, including how Leeds compares with Bradford, Sheffield and other big cities, read Is Leeds safe?.
Why does the same Leeds street look busier in some months?
Because recorded crime in Leeds rises through spring and summer. Across the six policing areas, February 2026 was the quietest shared month (7,651 incidents) and May 2026 the busiest (9,422), 23% more, by our count of police.uk data. Leeds North East rose from 721 in February to 1,075 in August 2026, up 49%.
The city centre area is the steadiest, between 1,131 (February 2026) and 1,420 (October 2025) a month, because shopping and nightlife keep it busy all year. One month on the crime map is a snapshot. If you are choosing where to live or comparing two streets, use the 12-month total in the postcode checker, and compare the same months for both places.
What does the Leeds crime map not show?
The Leeds crime map does not show exact addresses, the time of day, unreported crime or the most recent weeks. On 16 October 2026 the latest month is August 2026, British Transport Police data is missing for June to August 2026, and three of the six Leeds policing areas end in June or July 2026.
| Not on the map | Why it matters in Leeds |
|---|---|
| Exact locations | Every crime is moved to an anonymous point over a street or public place covering at least eight addresses. A dot on Briggate can stand for a shop anywhere along it. |
| Station crime, June to August 2026 | Leeds station and other stations are policed by British Transport Police, which did not supply those months, the data.police.uk changelog shows. |
| Uneven lag | Leeds City and Leeds North East end in August 2026, Leeds South and North West in July, Leeds East and West in June. Compare the same months. |
| Time of day | Street-level data has the month only, so it cannot separate a daytime shopping street from a late-night one. |
| Rate per resident | The map shows counts. The city centre has few residents and very large numbers of shoppers, students, workers and visitors. |
| Unreported crime | Only police-recorded crime appears. |
